"Out of Practice," 8:30 p.m., CBS. In its first three episodes, this has been a happy surprise. It is a traditional comedy with punch lines designed for a studio audience, but it also is well done. In part that's because it offers two generations of fine actors. The show focuses on a young therapist (Christopher Gorham) who is the low-achiever in his family. His brother, sister and divorcing parents are all doctors. Stockard Channing and Henry Winkler play the parents. They get the most from some clever material. That makes tonight's episode promising. Lydia (Channing) frets because her dog likes Stewart (Winkler) more. Meanwhile, Ben (Gorham) retreats into comic books so his siblings set up blind dates.

OF NOTE

"Four Minutes," 3 p.m., ESPN. If you missed this movie's recent premiere here is another chance. Jamie Machlachlan plays Roger Bannister, trying to be the first person to run the mile in four minutes.

"All Grown Up," 5 p.m., Nickelodeon. The kids and their moms try a road trip to New York, where Susie will be in the big parade singing about cheese. There are some moderately funny moments plus a few serious ones. Also the cheese song is a delight.

"The Last Sign," 6 p.m., Lifetime. A widow (Andie MacDowell) finds that her abusive dead husband (Tim Roth) is still tormenting her.

"Surface," 7 p.m., NBC. People are now taking the creatures seriously. Daughtery manages to fire a tracking device into one of them and Circo plans to tell the Pentagon they are dangerous.

"Weeds" season finale, 7 p.m., Showtime. As the season wraps up, things are closing in on the suburban drug dealer, played by Mary-Louise Parker. She has trouble with her son, her supplier and more.

"The Suite Life of Zack & Cody," 7:30 p.m., Disney Channel. Zack is trying to get out of homework so he pretends to be dyslexic.

"How I Met Your Mother," 7:30 p.m., CBS. When he finds a shirt he never liked, Ted phones an old girlfriend. Meanwhile, Barney wants Robin to say some nonsense phrases during her live news report.

"Medium," 9 p.m., NBC. Bothered by the case of a missing boy and his dad, Allison has been sleepwalking.

"CSI: Miami," 9 p.m., CBS. After a young man confesses to murder, Horatio fears what will happen in prison. He rushes to prove the guy was lying.
