Search to continue for missing sailboarder

By Peter Boylan
Advertiser Staff Writer

Rescue personnel will resume the search this morning for missing sailboarder Monica Weyant, who disappeared in the Kane'ohe Bay area Saturday morning.

Fire Capt. Kenison Tejada said the Fire Department and the Coast Guard yesterday used boats and helicopters to look for her. Searchers used three jet boats and two rescue boats to comb the waters around Coconut Island.

Weyant, a Ka'a'awa resident, was described as an experienced sailboarder and swimmer. She went sailboarding about 9 a.m. Saturday near Camp Kokokahi. Her husband, Daniel, began searching for her after 11 a.m. and reported her missing at 1:20 p.m., Tejada said.

Her sailboard was found washed ashore about 3:40 p.m. Saturday.

"We're still holding out hope," Tejada said. "We're trying to cover all our bases."

Friend Todd Wyrick called the 5-foot-2 Weyant "a top-notch athlete (and) accomplished paddler." He said she has done the Moloka'i to O'ahu canoe race for women several times and that she is also a windsurfer, motorcyclist and Tae Bo teacher. He described her as being "very, very active with a great, bubbly personality."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
