Motorcyclist dies on Maui

KIHEI, Maui — A 35-year-old motorcyclist died yesterday after colliding with a van on South Kihei Road.

Maui police said Jeffrey Lauritzen of Kihei was headed north on a 1991 Suzuki motocycle just before 4 p.m. when he hit a 2002 Ford van that was turning from the oncoming lane onto Uilani Street. Lauritzen was pronounced dead at 7:20 p.m. at Maui Memorial Medical Center. Police said he was not wearing a helmet.

The 47-year-old Kihei man who was driving the van was not injured.

Maui County has recorded nine traffic fatalities in 2005 compared with 13 a year ago.
