POLICE BEAT
Shooting leaves one man dead

Advertiser Staff

Police investigators are trying to sort out what happened last night during a shooting on Pupuole Street in Waipahu that left one man dead and two other men claiming the dead man shot at them before turning the gun on himself.

Police officers were sent to the scene about 9:55 p.m. after receiving a call about a shooting in progress.

They arrived to find a 47-year-old man dead from a gunshot wound and were then told by others at the scene that the dead man had shot at two other men, ages 23 and 32, before shooting himself.

Police this morning were trying to learn what sparked the incident and what the relationship was, if any, between the three men.

City bus driver arrested as sexual-assault suspect

Police arrested a city bus driver yesterday as a suspect in the attempted sexual assault Oct. 2 of a 15-year-old boy who was a passenger on the bus.

Police said the alleged incident took place between 4 and 6 p.m. in Pearl City.

Michelle Kennedy, manager of customer communications for Oahu Transit Services Inc., the private company that operates the city bus system, said the driver, 30, has been suspended without pay.

Kennedy said OTS cooperated with police in an investigation during the past three weeks that led to the arrest of the driver.

"Management at OTS had been made aware of several customer complaints, and encouraged the customers to file police reports so further action could be taken," Kennedy said.

She said no other bus company employees are believed to be involved and that the arrest is "certainly not reflective of the character and integrity of the overwhelmingly vast majority of bus employees."

Man arrested for stabbing

A 29-year-old Kalihi man was arrested yesterday evening as a suspect in the stabbing of a 26-year-old man at Kaimuki District Park.

Police said the stabbing victim, who is the boyfriend of a park maintenance worker, was attempting to break up a fight when he was stabbed twice.

The victim was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition.

The stabbing suspect fled the scene, but was located at his home in Kalihi, identified by witnesses and arrested for suspicion of attempted second-degree murder.

Police officer attacked

Police arrested an 18-year-old man and 16-year-old boy yesterday afternoon after they allegedly attacked a police officer who, along with other officers, was trying to prevent a gang fight at a neighborhood park in the Salt Lake area.

Police said that members of the Pearl City police district crime reduction unit noticed a fight was about to break out between two large groups of youths at the park about 3:05 p.m.

While the officers were trying to prevent the fight, one of the youths, 18, challenged one of the officers to a fight and was arrested for disorderly conduct.

While he was being arrested, the man slipped out of the handcuffs and tried to run but was captured by several officers who managed to subdue him.

The man, while being subdued, began to strangle the officer and the 16-year-old boy punched the same officer in the back of the head, resulting in minor injuries. Police eventually got the situation under control and arrested the two teens for suspicion of a variety of offenses including first-degree assault of a police officer, disorderly conduct, second-degree terroristic threatening, resisting arrest and second-degree escape.

Man, 70, tries to sell stolen container

Police undercover officers yesterday arrested a 70-year-old Waianae man after he allegedly tried to sell them a stolen 40-foot shipping container.

The container owner got word that the man was trying to sell it and called police. Officers went to the home about 12:40 p.m. and posed as buyers.

The man, who had the container on his property, was arrested for suspicion of detaining stolen property after he allegedly offered to sell it for $7,500.
