Advertiser Staff

In her professional debut, Honolulu's Michelle Wie shot a 2-under-par 70 and trails leader Annika Sorenstam by six shots at the Samsung World Championship.

Wie, who turned pro Oct. 5 and turned 16 Tuesday, was as low as 4-under at one point before bogeying two of the last five holes.

Wie had birdies on the following holes:

-- the par-4 second hole;

-- the par-5 seventh;

-- the par-4 10th;

-- the par-5 12th.

The Punahou School junior bogeyed the par-4 14th and the par-4 18th.

"It was my first day on the job," Wie told The Golf Channel. "It was a whole new experience for me ... so exciting ... It was really fun."

"We have the best 20 players here, and she's one of them," Lorie Kane said after a 6-under 66.

The invitation-only tournament is being played on the 6,462-yard Bigorn Golf club Canyons Course in Palm Desert, Calif.

The field consists of the 20 top women golfers in the world, including the top player, Sorenstam, and the top rookie, Paula Creamer. All 20 players will get a paycheck. Last place is worth $10,624.

Wie is tied for 12th.

Her entourage included just about everyone from her support group — mom and dad, swing coach David Leadbetter and his wife, three executives from William Morris Agency, agent Ross Berlin and his wife, Nike chairman Phil Knight in a rare appearance, along with the three other Nike staff members.

Sorenstam birdied three of the last four holes on the front nine and also birdied three of four in the middle of the back nine to vault into the lead. She finished with a 64, despite missing a short birdie putt on the 18th.

Gloria Park shot her best score of the year, a 7-under-par 65, and is in second, tied with Cristie Kerr, Wie's playing partner.

Kane and Creamer had scores of 6-under 66.
