TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"Alias," 7 p.m., ABC. The show is working Rachel into the plot as Sydney's protege. She's played by Rachel Nichols, who was excellent in Fox's summer series "The Inside." Tonight, she's suspected of being a traitor; Syd and Thomas Grace search for her.

OF NOTE

"Smallville," 7 p.m., WB. Everyone's a critic, it seems. Perturbed by all the odd people coming from Smallville, someone decides to have a missile destroy the place.

"Joey," 7 p.m., NBC. With his movie money flowing in, Joey wants to buy the perfect house. But the owner (played by Betty White) only wants to sell to a responsible family man. Now he needs to set up an elaborate ruse.

"Will & Grace," 7:30 p.m., NBC. Friends try to help friends — without much success. Jack gives Will swimming lessons. Karen sets Grace up with a blind date, played by Andy Richter. That results in a marathon, nine-course dinner.

"CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," 8 p.m., CBS. Grissom and Catherine come across a military bunker with bodies of cult members who apparently took poison.

"Making the Band," 9 and 10 p.m., MTV. If you missed last week's season opener of this reality show, catch it now. A new episode airs at 10.

"ER," 9 p.m., NBC. After nine years in a coma, a patient wakes up in the emergency room. That leaves Kovac with an ethical question of how much information to tell.

"Without a Trace," 9 p.m., CBS. Roselyn Sanchez joins the show, stepping into a ratings hit. Here, the Puerto Rico native plays a former cop whose methods don't mesh with the missing-persons people.
