Troops headed to earthquake-stricken Pakistan

Associated Press

Two Hawaii-based military units have received orders to deploy on aid missions to Louisiana and Pakistan.

About 60 soldiers and four CH-47 Chinook heavy lift helicopters from Schofield Barracks will assist in ferrying supplies and injured people to and from the earthquake-stricken areas of Pakistan. They will leave this weekend.

Last week's South Asia earthquake is estimated to have killed more than 35,000 people in Pakistan.

Rescue workers on Friday abandoned the search for survivors who may have been trapped following the 7.6-magnitude quake that hit on Oct. 8. Officials said there was little hope of finding more people alive amid the rubble of the tens of thousands of buildings that collapsed.

"We are saddened by the events that have taken place, and we look forward to serving the people of Pakistan during this time of need," said Maj. Gen. Benjamin Mixon, commander of the 25th Infantry Division and U.S. Army Hawaii.

A small team from the Hawaii National Guard will also deploy Monday to Louisiana to support the Hurricanes Katrina and Rita relief effort. They will set up their emergency communications system to become a part of a small technical operations center.
