Big Island escapee caught on tip

Advertiser Staff

HILO, Hawai'i — An inmate who escaped Oct. 2 from the Hawai'i Community Correctional Center was caught yesterday while napping in a car in Hawaiian Paradise Park.

Police said an anonymous tip led officers to the Puna subdivision, where they found Franklin Enos, 31, parked in a driveway. He was arrested without a struggle.

Before escaping with two other inmates, Enos was being held on a pending parole violation. Enos, Shawn DeCosta, 25, and Kole Kuokamakana Race-Joaquin, 23, broke out of the Hilo jail by removing a metal screen and louvers from restroom window at the Hilo jail and lowering themselves to the ground.

DeCosta and Race-Joaquin remain at large. Enos is back at HCCC charged with escape in addition to the parole violation.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the other two escapees should call detective Juergen Canda at (808) 961-2381, the police nonemergency number at (808) 935-3311, or Crime Stoppers in Hilo at (808) 961-8300 or in Kona at (808) 329-8181.
