Kailua tops Roosevelt, 34-6

By Stacy Kaneshiro
Advertiser Staff Writer

Jacob and Micah Gibson combined for 213 yards of offense and two touchdowns to lead visiting Kailua over Roosevelt, 34-6, last night to clinch an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red playoff berth in the regular-season Eastern Division finale at the Rough Riders' stadium.

Depending on the outcome of tonight's McKinley-Castle game, the Surfriders (3-5 overall, 3-3 East) can get the East's third seed, having the tiebreaker against idle Farrington (3-3), which would be fourth. If the Tigers beat the Knights, there will be a three-way tie for third. McKinley beat Kailua, but lost to Farrington and Kailua beat Farrington. A coin toss would determine the order of seeding. Castle (5-0) and Kahuku (5-1) have the first and second seeds, respectively. The top three teams in each division draw byes in the first week of the playoffs.

"This feels good," said Kailua running back Jacob Gibson, who rushed for 97 yards on 12 carries. "We have to overcome everything in our way now. We just have to play as a team."

Micah Gibson led all receivers with 116 yards on four receptions, including a 42-yard TD.

The game started well for the Rough Riders (3-5, 1-5) when Makena Artuyo recovered a Kailua fumble on the Surfriders' first series of the game at the Kailua 45. Two plays later, Koloa Kahalewai-Crawford hit Daniel Arruda on a 50-yard pass play for a touchdown. The PAT was blocked, keeping it 6-0 with 7:47 left in the first quarter.

Kailua scored on its ensuing series with quarterback Nathan Alvarado connecting with Micah Gibson on a 42-yard TD pass. Roosevelt also blocked the PAT to keep the game tied at 6.

The Surfriders took the lead early in the second quarter, when running back Jacob Gibson scored on a 4-yard run to cap a four-play, 68-yard drive. The PAT made it 13-6.

Kailua added another TD 20 seconds before the half on a 4-yard run by Gabriel Taito to make it 20-6. Taito also had a 2-yard TD in the third quarter. A 52-yard interception return for TD by Marshall Freitas rounded out the scoring.

Kailua's defense had four interceptions and six sacks, led by Tanu Paleafei's four.

"We had a lot of young players, young in our system, at least," Kailua coach Gary Rosolowich said. "They're just starting to get their grip on it now. They're getting some confidence now."
