Food, products show at Blaisdell

The 41st annual Food and New Products Show will be Friday through next Sunday at the Blaisdell Center and exhibition hall.

The food show will be in the arena and the new products show in the exhibition hall from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. next Sunday.

Admission is $5 for adults, and $4 for seniors 65 and over, military with identification and children 7-12 with a paying adult. Kids under 7 are free with a paying adult.

KEWALO



54-FOOT BOAT RUNS AGROUND

No one was injured when a 54-foot fishing vessel ran aground yesterday at Kewalo Basin.

The master of Two Star contacted the Coast Guard at about 4:30 p.m. and reported the vessel had ended up in that predicament after experiencing engine problems.

All four aboard swam safely to shore.

The Pacific Environmental Corporation was on scene last night removing the fuel. There were no reports of pollution.


PALOLO

$1.75M GRANT GOES TO CHINESE HOME

The Palolo Chinese Home has received a $1.75 million community development block grant for the final phase of a major expansion project that is extending the home's reach.

The project, which began in early 2003, has included the renovation of the home's Lani Booth Hall to provide adult care, short-term respite, and skilled nursing care for seniors and serve as a coordinating point for community outreach activities.

It also included purchase of a nearby property to provide hospice services and office space for in-home operations and staff; and construction of a food service complex to provide meals for residents and home delivery.

The $1.75 million grant will support the development of the new food service complex.


O'AHU

HPD IN WEEKLY SOBRIETY CHECKS

Until Sept. 30, 2006, the Ho-nolulu Police Department will conduct at least one sobriety checkpoint every week in an effort to deter alcohol- or drug-impaired drivers.

The checkpoints will be set up at unannounced times and locations, and additional checkpoints will be set up during holidays and other designated periods.

Honolulu police officers arrested 3,320 impaired drivers from Oct. 1, 2004, to Sept. 30 this year.

WILSON TUNNEL TO CLOSE TEMPORARILY

The state is planning several night closings of the Wilson Tunnel on the Likelike Highway this week for drainage cleaning and survey work.

  • The Honolulu-bound tunnel will be closed from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. today through Wednes-day

  • The Kan'eohe-bound tunnel will be closed from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. Thursday and Friday.

    MARCH TO MARK WOMAN'S SLAYING

    A silent march is planned for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to remember Felicia LaDuke, whose 21-year-old ex-boyfriend is accused of strangling her, running over her body with her car and leaving her in an isolated area in Mokule'ia Oct. 7.

    Jeffery White, a Schofield Barracks soldier, was indicted by an O'ahu grand jury on a murder charge.

    If convicted, he would face a mandatory life prison term with parole.

    Concerned residents, social service agency representatives and others will take part in the march, starting from Honolulu Hale. Joe Bloom of Catholic Charities & Therapeutic Services and others will speak afterward. Call 535-0159.
