Seasider captures tennis title

Advertiser Staff

Brigham Young-Hawai'i's Julia Ustyuzhanina defeated West Florida's Suzanna Cavalcante, 6-4, 6-0, yesterday to capture the NCAA II singles title of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Small College Championships in Fort Myers, Fla.

Ustyuzhanina then advanced to the Small College Super Bowl, where she led Marta Simic of Broward (Fla.) Junior College, 6-4, 4-2, when she retired from the match.

Ustyuzhanina withdrew because the Super Bowl final is scheduled to be played today and it is against BYUH policy and its sponsoring institution, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, to compete on the Sabbath.

Ustyuzhanina and Tetyana Bula also withdrew from the doubles match after leading Hillsborough (Fla.) Junior College's Hiroko Nishikawa and Amanda Yogus, 6-0, 5-1.
