Two pedestrians were taken to Queens Medical Center after being struck by a Ford SUV this afternoon while walking down a sidewalk in Chinatown. The SUV also hit a fire hydrant.

One man is in critical condition and the other is in guarded condition, said EMS District Chief Wayne Kruse.

Both men are in their 40s or 50s, Kruse said.

According to Stephen Bedford of Makakilo, who was shopping with his father-in-law when he saw the SUV swerve onto the sidewalk after he said it was cut off by another car. He said the SUV pinned one of the men against a wall and the other was pinned under the vehicle.

The driver of the SUV was OK.

The accident happened at the corner of North Nimitz Highway and Kekaulike Street and forced the temporary closure of three Westbound lanes on Nimitz Highway.

One lane for through traffic remains open.
