POLICE BEAT
Suspect caught stealing car

Advertiser Staff

A would-be car thief was caught in the act early this morning in Waipahu after a police officer drove by a car parked along Manager's Drive and sensed something was wrong.

The officer was responding to a domestic abuse call about 1:30 a.m. when he passed a car near the corner of Hiapo Street and Manager's Drive and noticed the driver's door was open and one of the car's side windows had been smashed out.

He then saw a man in the driver's seat working on the ignition. The police officer got out of his car, walked up to the parked car and checked the ignition. He found a key from another car jammed in the ignition.

The officer detained the man found sitting in the car, contacted the car's registered owner and learned the car had been stolen.

The 25-year-old Waikele resident found in the car was then arrested for suspicion of attempted car theft.

'Known criminal character' arrested

Police yesterday arrested a man described as a "known criminal character" in connection with the theft of a motorcycle last month.

Members of the Wahiawa police district beach task force spotted the man operating the stolen motorcycle on Sept. 25 and waited until he stopped at a public rest room, where they attempted to arrest him.

The man ignored orders to stop, got back on the cycle and went speeding off.

Because of the danger to the public and concerns the motorcycle operator might injure himself, police chose not to get into a high-speed pursuit with him.

Task force members located the suspect yesterday and arrested him for suspicion of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, driving without a license and reckless driving.
