Man charged in van-with-kids case

Advertiser Staff

A 29-year-old man has been charged with three felonies in connection with the theft of a van with two small boys inside the vehicle.

Edmund K. Stanley is accused of stealing the 2005 Toyota Sienna when the mother of the two boys went into the Bank of Hawaii 'Ewa Beach branch Wednesday afternoon. The van was found about a half-hour later at the Kapolei Shopping Center.

Police said the boys, 2 and 4, had been asleep in the van. They were reunited with their parents.

Stanley is charged with one count of stealing the van and two counts of interfering with the parents' custody of the boys. Each of the three charges carries a prison term of up to five years.

Stanley's bail was set at $50,000. He was to appear in Honolulu District Court on Tuesday to determine whether the prosecution has enough evidence to send the case to trial.

The theft was the fourth in seven months involving a vehicle stolen with at least one child inside.
