Advertiser staff

A male bicyclist was fatally injured this morning during a "hit-and-run" incident on North Nimitz Highway in Iwilei.

Police said the bicyclist was headed west, possibly in the bike lane, when he was struck from behind by a vehicle that did not stop.

Based on a mirror that was recovered at the scene, police believe the cyclist was hit by a truck, van or multi-purpose vehicle at approximately 1:55 a.m.

Police are asking anyone with information about the case to call traffic investigators at 529-3499.

The bicyclist was found laying partially on the sidewalk and in some bushes when city paramedics arrived on the scene along Nimitz Highway, about 600 feet west of Pacific Street.

The injured man, who had not been identified as of 9:45 this morning, was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition and died later with multiple injuries including a broken leg, police said.
