Police arrested a 31-year-old man for suspicion of attempted murder and third-degree assault and were searching for a second man following an incident late Saturday night between a motorist, his passenger and two pedestrians.

The pedestrians, a 45-year-old man and his wife, 42, were crossing the intersection of Mahukona Street and Kapiolani Boulevard about 10:40 p.m. when words were exchanged, police said.

They said the couple continued through the intersection and were walking on the sidewalk along Kapiolani when they were approached by the car's passenger. The passenger punched the male pedestrian in the face several times, and the man who had been driving the car appeared and tried to break up the fight, police said.

As the two men who had been in the car were walking away, the driver punched the woman pedestrian, and the suspected assailants left the area, police said.

The driver later turned himself into police and was arrested.

Man arrested in stolen Honda

A 42-year-old O'ahu man was arrested early this morning near the airport after a police officer found him in the driver's seat of a Honda that had been reported stolen.

The officer had been sent to the Plaza Hotel on Koapaka Street at approximately 3:30 a.m. to investigate a theft complaint. While at the hotel, the officer was told a possible suspect was seen leaving the hotel in a green Honda automobile traveling toward Koapaka.

The officer checked Koapaka and found a green Honda parked at the end of the street with a man in the driver's seat. The officer checked on the Honda's registration and found a 63-year-old man had reported the car stolen.

A witness from the hotel went to where the Honda was pulled over and identified the driver as the man who had driven the car away from the hotel. police said.

After finding the car's ignition had been "punched," the police officer arrested the man found in the Honda for suspicion of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle.
