ACLU files suit

The American Civil Liberties Union of Hawai'i filed a federal civil rights lawsuit today against the state because of alleged violations at the Hawaii Youth Correctional Facility.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court, alleges that the state fails to protect wards from abuse and harassment, fails to provide wards with due process and fails to provide the wards with access to counsel concerning unconstitutional conditions and practices at the correction facility, according to an ACLU press release.

The lawsuit asks for a court order to appoint a monitor to oversee and implement new policies and procedures to ensure enforcement of the wards' constitutional rights, the ACLU stated.

The lawsuit is the ACLU's second against the correctional facility for its alleged harassment and abuse of the wards.
