Helicopters assist in battling Lahaina brush fire

LAHAINA, Maui Three helicopters are assisting firefighters in battling a brush fire in former sugar cane fields below Lahainaluna High School.Deputy Fire Chief Neal Bal said the fire was not threatening any structures. Officials at Lahainaluna and nearby Princess Nahienaena Elementary School did not report any disruptions from the fire.
Bal said the fire was reported at 11:40 a.m. today and had burned about 100 acres as of 1:30 p.m.
Several bulldozers and water tankers also are helping firefighting efforts. Ball said the winds had subsided from earlier in the day and that crews were beginning "to get a handle on it."
