Advertiser staff

A man believed to be in his 30s was critically injured last night when he was shot during a confrontation with a police officer.

Police said a security guard saw a suspicious man in a parking lot about 10:20 p.m. near the corner of Queen Street and Ward Avenue and reported the incident to his dispatcher.

A short time later, the guard saw the same man sitting in a parked car on Queen Street and police were called.

A responding officer arrived on scene and was approaching the car when the man inside jumped out, drew a knife and lunged at the officer, police said.

The officer drew his service weapon and shot the man, police said.

He was taken in critical condition by city paramedics to The Queen's Medical Center. No information on his condition was available this morning.

Police opened an attempted murder case against the man who was shot.
