Agbayani gets a World Series title

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i's Benny Agbayani can claim a World Series title.

Agbayani is an outfielder for the Chiba Lotte Marines, who completed a four-game sweep of the Hanshin Tigers with a 3-2 victory Wednesday in Osaka, Japan.

South Korean Lee Seung-yeop drove in all three runs as the Marines won their first Japan Series title in 31 years.

Bobby Valentine, who was Agbayani's manager when both were with the New York Mets, became the first foreign manager to win the Japan Series.

Valentine and Agbayani guided the Mets to the World Series in 2000, where they lost in five games to the New York Yankees.

According to Agbayani's mother, Faith, the former Hawai'i Pacific University and Saint Louis athlete did not play in the final game.
