Michigan junior Todd Iacovelli, a 2002 graduate of Punahou from Kailua, was named the Big Ten Men's Runner of the Week after finishing fifth in the 8-kilometer race at the Eastern Michigan Classic Saturday.

Iacovelli, who was timed in 25:10.3, was running in his first race of the season.

"It was a really encouraging race," Iacovelli said in an e-mail. "It's my second best time ever and I've only been running for two weeks since having to take more than three weeks off with that nasty stress reaction in my shin."

He said he had been sharing e-mails with state cross country champion Lauren Ho, a senior at Hawai'i Baptist, who was also struggling with an injury to start her season.

"She is a really good motivator," Iacovelli said. "She is really inspiring me right now to give my best."

It was the first Runner of the Week award for Iacovelli.
