Annika Sorenstam, whose eight-shot victory in the Samsung World Championship was all but forgotten in the chaos of Michelle Wie's disqualification, sent the Punahou junior an encouraging message the day after the event, according to reports in Associated Press and USA Today.

Sorenstam's text message to Wie's cell phone basically said she was sorry Wie got DQ'd, thought it was a bad decision and Wie should be proud of how she played.

"Annika was not happy to hear of Michelle's disqualification," Wie's father, BJ, told USA Today. "She encouraged her to keep her chin up and not to get frustrated or disappointed. They were comforting words. Michelle was pretty quiet, but after getting the message from Annika, she was excited."

This weekend, Wie will present her check for $500,000 to the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund, which she pledged the day she turned professional. On Sunday, she will reportedly play golf with former president Bill Clinton.

AP also reported that Wie's entry into the British Open might be a long-distance shot. The major recently opened its eligibility to women, but only those who finish in the top five at LPGA majors can enter the first (18-hole) stage of qualifying. Top finishers there advance to the 36-hole final stage.
