Drowned boater identified

Advertiser Staff

A man who drowned yesterday after he and his fishing companion were tossed into the water from their boat just off Kahana Bay has been identified by the city Department of the Medical Examiner as Gerald Lee, 58, of Kane'ohe.

Lee and the other man were fishing about a quarter-mile offshore about midday when a wave hit their boat, fire Capt. Kenison Tejada said.

The boat's motor continued to run, driving the boat in circles and preventing the men from getting back in, Tejada said.

Lee's companion said he was able to inflate the vest and swim ashore.

The surviving fisherman reached shore about 1 p.m. and summoned help.

The fire department's Air One helicopter found Lee floating in the water. Rescue workers brought him to shore and administered CPR, but could not revive him.

Lee was taken to Kahuku Hospital in very critical condition and died there later.
