Fresno State stops Warriors, 27-13

Wendell Mathis rushed for 229 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 22 Fresno State to a 27-13 victory over Hawai'i in Western Athletic Conference football.

A season-low Aloha Stadium crowd of 23,157 watched the game, which was nationally televised by ABC.

Fresno State, which won for the first time in Hawai'i since 1994, is 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the WAC . Hawai'i is 3-5 and 3-3.

Mathis' 19 carries included touchdown runs of 3, 3 and 78 yards. Fresno State quarterback Paul Pinegar completed 15 of 25 passes for 213 yards and a touchdown. He was intercepted once.

Hawai'i's Devone Bess had 14 catches for 158 yards. Bess caught a 15-yard pass from Colt Brennan for UH's only touchdown. Dan Kelly kicked field goals of 34 and 39 yards.

Kelly's second field goal closed Fresno State's lead to 14-13 in the third quarter, but Mathis scored on a 3-yard run in the third quarter and a 78-yard run in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

Brennan finished 35 of 54 for 327 yards. He was intercepted twice and sacked five times.
