What is it about Halloween season that makes some of us — well, a LOT of us — want to scare ourselves silly?

Maybe it's because:

  • You're a student, and it's your big break from the fall routine of classes and studying and midterms.

  • You're a parent, and it's your big break from the fall routine of classes and studying and midterms. And it's your last chance to let loose before gearing up for the holiday season.

  • You're just starting your career after college, and it's time for a last fling before the responsibilities of adulthood really set in.

  • You're just keeping up with the good ol' American traditions of tricking those treat-seekers, dressing up and entering those haunted houses for a great big psychesettling screamfest.

Well, if that's the case, head for Windward Mall's "Scare Factory III," 10 rooms of screamingly chilling ickies that just might haunt your formerly sweet dreams. It's from noon to 10 p.m. today, noon to 6 p.m. tomorrow and 6 to 10 p.m. Monday (that's Halloween!). It's in the upper level, across from Glow Putt Mini Golf. Admission is $6 general; free for kids under 4. 235-1143.

There are other haunts around the island, too, including the annual Easter Seals Haunted House, 6 to 10 p.m. today at 91-1251 Renton Road, 'Ewa Beach. There's face-painting, games, arts and crafts, too. See Page E4.
