Pedestrian hit on Big Island

HILO, Hawai'i — A Big Island pedestrian was in critical condition at Hilo Medical Center after being struck by a hit-and-run driver this morning while trying to cross Kilauea Avenue.

Police said the collision happened at 5 a.m. near Kapi'olani School in Hilo. The name of the 48-year-old Hilo woman injured was not released. Police said the pedestrian was not in a crosswalk when she was struck by a vehicle headed toward Hilo town.

Police did not have a description of the vehicle, but said it may have a broken headlight and front-end damage.
