Business briefs: Hotel revenue on record pace

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i's hotel industry is on track to reach record room revenues of nearly $3 billion this year, beating last year's record of $2.73 billion, said Hospitality Advisors LLC president Joseph Toy.

Room revenue for the first three-quarters of the year ending September reached an all-time high of $2.27 billion, thanks largely to record year-to-date average daily rates of $165.36, according to data released today by hotel consultancy Hospitality Advisors.

Room demand also grew 1.9 percent over last year to 13.7 million room nights sold, lifting statewide occupancy 3.3 percentage points to 82.5 percent. Statewide revenue per available room — a key measure of profitability — for the year through September also set a record $136.40.

"The third quarter was exceptional," Toy said. "If room revenues keeps pace with the first nine months of the year, we should approach $3 billion in room revenues which will be an all-time high."

Toy attributed the gains in part to growth in higher-spending travelers, including Japanese visitors, the cruise market, U.S. East visitors and business travelers. He also cited overall improvements in hotel properties and public infrastructure in the last several years, particularly in Waikiki.

Overall visitor arrivals are projected to reach a record 7.4 million this year, as Hawai'i continues to benefit from its reputation as an exotic, yet safe, place to visit.
