A 42-year-old homeless man driving a stolen car picked the wrong place and time when he pulled out of a convenience store parking lot in Pearl City early yesterday morning and straight into the path of an oncoming car driven by a police officer.

The officer said he was on routine patrol duty when he saw a Nissan pull out of the store parking lot at Kamehameha Highway and Lehua Avenue.

The officer said he had to swerve to avoid the car and decided to run the car's license plates. He quickly learned that a 37-year-old woman had reported the car stolen.

The driver was ordered to pull over and was arrested for suspicion of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle.

A 26-year-old Kahalu'u man was arrested Tuesday for suspicion of first-degree robbery and attempted murder in connection with a July 29 incident in which a 49-year-old Kane'ohe man confronted a man he found stealing items from his garage.

The homeowner told police he found the man in his garage about 8:30 p.m. and that the intruder jumped in a pickup truck and drove at him while fleeing the area.

Police said the Kane'ohe man wound up on the truck's hood as the suspect continued to speed away but was able to get off the truck when the suspect eventually slowed.

Police later identified a suspect via a photographic lineup and arrested him. The victim suffered minor injuries in the incident, police said.

Police said witnesses saw the man break into the car, remove a number of items and place them in the car that he had arrived in.

The suspected thief drove away and was spotted by police a short time later. Police followed the suspect until he crashed his car into a traffic-light post and tried to run away.

He was captured after a short foot chase and arrested.

KIDNAPPING, ABUSE ALLEGED

A 23-year-old Kalihi man was arrested Tuesday after his 20-year-old girlfriend told police he held her captive in their Linapuni Street apartment for more than 20 hours and beat her.

The woman told police she got into an argument with her boyfriend about 2 p.m. Monday and that he punched and slapped her.

She said the man made her get onto her knees and hit her 30 or 40 times with a wallet chain.

The woman told police she managed to run out of the apartment at one point, but the boyfriend chased her down, dragged her back into the apartment, locked all the doors and refused to let her leave.

She said the boyfriend finally fell asleep Tuesday morning and that she managed to get out of the apartment and call police, who arrived a short time later and arrested him. Charges of kidnapping and abuse of a household member were pending.
