Work to disrupt Haleakala traffic

HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK — Maintenance work will delay traffic and close roads in Haleakala National Park for much of September.

Crews and heavy equipment will be clearing drainage ditches and raking loose rocks Wednesday through Sept. 30. The work will be Monday through Thursday, with the entire park open Fridays and weekends.

On workdays, park visitors should expect delays of up to 30 minutes from 8 a.m. to noon, and traffic up to the summit will be closed at the visitor center from noon to 5 p.m. Traffic leading from the summit will close from 1:30 to 5 p.m.

Park fees will not be collected during the noon to 5 p.m. closure. During the work, additional nature programs may be scheduled for Hosmer Grove, below the visitor center. For information, call (808) 572-4459 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.


LANA'I

MOTOR VEHICLES STAFF TO TRAIN

LANA'I CITY — The Lana'i satellite office of the county Division of Motor Vehicles and Licensing will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday for staff training. The office will reopen from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 8.


PEARL HARBOR

OBSERVANCE SET AT MIGHTY MO

Public ceremonies are scheduled for tomorrow at the USS Missouri Memorial to mark the 60th anniversary of the end of the war in the Pacific.

The program will begin at 8:45 a.m. at Ford Island.

The program will feature two U.S. sailors who watched Japan's formal surrender aboard the Missouri and other dignitaries.

Keynote speaker will be Adm. Gary Roughead, commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet.

Reservations are recommended.

BIG ISLAND

FEEDBACK SOUGHT ON DEVELOPMENT

Big Island planning officials need volunteers for a committee to help with the North and South Kona Community Development Plan.

The county Planning Department has selected Wilson Okamoto Corp. of Honolulu as the consultant for the long-range plan for the rapidly growing area, and the consultant has assembled a project team.

A volunteer steering committee will hold meetings, participate in training, attend community workshops, and relay information about the process to the rest of the community.

Members are appointed by Mayor Harry Kim and confirmed by the County Council.

The Planning Department is accepting nominations. Applications are available at the county Planning Department, or by calling 327-3510 or 961-8288. Forms also can be downloaded from www.co.hawaii.hi.us/directory/dir_plan.htm.

The deadline for applications is noon Sept. 26.


STATEWIDE

MILITARY AFFAIRS GRANT AWARDED

The Chamber of Commerce of Hawai'i received a $50,000 grant-in-aid from the state to support its military affairs program.

The grant will sustain programs, projects and events that help the military in meeting defense and security strategies from the Asia-Pacific region.
