No. 8 HPU surges to 8-0 in volleyball

Vera Oliveira had 44 assists, 11 digs and seven kills as No. 8 Hawai'i Pacific remained unbeaten with a 30-20, 30-18, 30-26 victory over No. 13 UC San Diego yesterday at the Coyote Classic Women's Volleyball Tournament in San Bernardino, Calif.

Barbara Martin added 14 kills and Flavia Brakling 11 for the Sea Warriors (8-0).

Earlier in the day, HPU defeated Sonoma State, 26-30, 30-15, 30-14, 30-17 behind Brakling's 18 kills and Martin's 15.

UH-HILO IN ALASKA FINAL

Taina Savage had 26 kills and 29 digs as Hawai'i-Hilo beat North Dakota, 31-29, 30-32, 25-30, 30-26, 15-9, yesterday at the Aspen Hotels Invitational in Anchorage, Alaska.

Rose Ramsey added 22 kills for the Vulcans (5-4), who advanced to today's championship match.

Earlier, UHH beat Bemidji State, 30-22, 30-22, 30-11.

MCLACHLIN TIES FOR 8TH

Parker McLachlin shot 2-over-par 72 in yesterday's final round to finish tied for eighth at the Grey Goose Gateway Tour's final event on its Desert Summer Series tour.

Brian Kontak's 65 shot him into first place with a four-day total of 19-under 262 at Talking Stick's North and South Courses, in Scottsdale, Ariz. Kontak collected $22,000.

McLachlin, a Punahou graduate, earned $3,300 with a final total of 271. Hawai'i State Open champion Chad Saladin (71—274) shared 21st and won $1,610. Hawai'i Baptist graduate Norman-Ganin Asao (76—286) won $500.
