TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"P.O.V.: The Hobart Shakespeareans," 10, PBS. Each school year, Rafe Esquith creates a small miracle. The fifth-grade teacher in Central Los Angeles directs a Shakespearean show. Many of the parents don't speak English, but their children master it. Professional actors (Ian McKellen and Michael York) stop in to help. Mel Stuart (who directed "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory" 34 years ago) followed Esquith for months. The resulting documentary offers fresh hope for classroom transformations.

"Garbo," 2 and 5:30, Turner Classic Movies. The world assumed Greta Garbo was a solemn loner. She made her last movie in 1941, and until her death (in 1990 at 84) she lived alone in New York, shunning the public. The real Garbo, friends and family say here, was nothing like that. She savored her retirement, walking with friends, shopping, gathering art and joking impishly. She was a fascinating figure. Here is a view of her career and life.

OF NOTE

"Flesh and the Devil" (1927), 3:30 p.m., Turner Classic Movies. This channel will be showing Greta Garbo classics each Tuesday during September. This is a romance with John Gilbert, her screen favorite.

"Go, Diego, Go" debut, 5 p.m., Nickelodeon. "Dora the Explorer" gets a spinoff with this show, which will air at 8 and 10:30 a.m., weekdays. Diego, 8, is Dora's cousin. He is bilingual with humans and talks to animals. He also rescues them.

"The Law Firm," 5 p.m., Bravo. This hour — the third of eight — is the one that was set to air on NBC before the network suddenly bailed out. Now Bravo steps in. Next week's hour is a dandy.

"Gilmore Girls," 7 and 8 p.m., WB. In the first rerun, Rory gets a setback to her aspirations to be a news reporter. In the second, a great season finale, she ends up in jail.

"House," 7 p.m., Fox. In last week's brilliant rerun, we learned one reason for Dr. House's bitterness: While he was unconscious, his then-love (Sela Ward) made a medical decision that led to his disability. Tonight (an hour earlier than usual), he is treating her husband. It's another strong episode.

"Wide Angle: Unfinished Country," 9 p.m., PBS. Forever in turmoil, Haiti prepares for its presidential election in November.
