Matson Navigation Co. said today it will increase by 1.5 percent the fuel surcharge paid by customers using its Hawai'i and Guam/Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands shipping services.

Matson, the state's largest shipper, said the increase to 13 percent from 11.5 percent is effective Oct. 2. The announcement comes on the heels of a similar move by Horizon Lines earlier this week.

Matson recently implemented a new program in which fuel costs are evaluated on a quarterly basis, with the fuel surcharge adjusted accordingly, up or down. Matson said the quarterly review process is designed to better allow customers to plan their shipping costs and anticipate any adjustments on a regular, predictable schedule.
