CORP courts to get full workout

The Tennis Complex at Central O'ahu Regional Park will be packed with players of all ages this weekend.

Some 250 will be playing in the Super Senior Sectional tomorrow and Sunday. At the other end of the spectrum, national coach Mervyn Webster will be here for a Super 8's & 10's Training Session from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. each day. Webster will be helped by Hawai'i Pacific Tennis Foundation pros Vanne Akagi, Chris James and Mark Allen.

Tomorrow at 2 p.m., the HPTF is having a U.S. Open and Cardio Tennis party. The women's final will be shown while food is served, with a Cardio Tennis session to follow.

The party is open and free for Foundation members. It is $20 for non-members.

WHEELCHAIR OPEN HERE ON OCT. 12-16

The Central O'ahu Regional Park Tennis Complex will be the site of the International Tennis Federation Wheelchair Open, Oct. 12 to 16. The event is a week after the U.S. Open Wheelchair Championships in San Diego.

Volunteers are needed for tournament administration, player parties, officiating, ball persons and, especially, transportation and lodging.

Training for officials and ball persons, for this event and others, will be offered Sept. 24.

TENNIS WEEKEND AT ALA MOANA, MCCOY

The 19th annual Tennis Weekend will be Oct. 15 and 16 at Ala Moana Park and McCoy Pavilion.

The two days will be filled with free skills, racquet demo and Cardio Tennis clinics for all levels of play, Sportwall activities, tennis industry and health exhibits, USTA member and Junior Team Tennis activities, a silent auction and a celebration of the 25th anniversary of USA League Tennis.

Guests include Stan Smith, who was ranked No. 1 in the world in 1971 and '72 after winning the U.S. Open and Wimbledon, and Jose Higueras, a former top 10 player whose students included Pete Sampras, Michael Chang and Carlos Moya. Higueras is now a special adviser for USTA Player Development.

The USTA/Hawai'i Pacific Section annual banquet will be Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. at Ala Moana Hotel. Smith will be the keynote speaker and entertainment will be provided by Makana. Members of the inaugural Hawai'i Tennis Hall of Fame will be honored. Tickets are $35 each.

CONVENTION SET FOR UH TENNIS COMPLEX

The United States Professional Tennis Association Hawai'i/San Diego Convention will be Oct. 17 and 18 at the University of Hawai'i Tennis Complex. The USPTA Championships will be held the weekend before.

Convention speakers include Stan Smith, who won 39 singles titles in his career, and Jose Higueras, who used to coach Jim Courier, Pete Sampras, Carlos Moya, Sergi Bruguera, Todd Martin and Jennifer Capriati.
