A 10-month-old baby girl remained in critical condition this morning following a collision near Waimea Bay last night between a van and a compact car that sent five people to two hospitals.

Police traffic investigators said a white Dodge van was traveling north-bound on Kamehameha Highway when it drifted across the center line and struck a blue Honda sedan nearly head on about 9:10 p.m.

The 38-year-old North shore woman, the baby's grandmother, was driving the Honda and was airlifted to The Queen's Medical Center in serious condition along with the baby, who was listed in critical condition upon arrival at Queen's. The baby was being transported in the Honda in a child restraint seat that was placed in the front passenger seat, police said.

City paramedics said the baby was not breathing when they arrived but revived after CPR was performed on her.

The 55-year-old man from the North shore who was driving the van was also flown to Queen's and was listed in serious condition upon his arrival, police said. Two passengers in the van, a 12-year-old boy and 20-year-old man, were taken to Wahiawa General Hospital and were reported to be in fair condition.

Accident investigators said speed and alcohol appear to be factors in the case.

Ex-boyfriend arrested for threatening

A 31-year-old Kahalu'u man was arrested last night after he allegedly forced his way into his ex-girlfriend's Kailua home and threatened her father, police said.

They said the man entered the home, argued with the former girlfriend's 64-year-old father and threatened the father while leaving.

Police went to a home on Ulukahiki Street and arrested the suspect for suspicion of first-degree burglary and second-degree terroristic threatening.

Suspected arrested in car theft

A 27-year-old man helped police locate a suspected car thief last night in Wahiawa.

Police said the man saw another man driving a stolen car about 8:10 p.m. The witness then began following the stolen vehicle and called 911.

Officers arrived and found the car at a home on Ohai Place where they arrested a 40-year-old man for suspicion of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle.

Woman arrested forging check

A 35-year-old Salt Lake woman was arrested yesterday after she allegedly forged and successfully cashed a $300 check at a Kalihi bank at 2 p.m. on Sunday and tried to do the same thing again yesterday evening.

A 71-year-old man on whose account the first check was drawn had already reported that his checkbook was stolen by the time the alleged forger returned to the bank to try to cash a second check.

The woman was detained at the back until police arrived to arrest her for suspicion of two counts of second-degree forgery and one count each of second-degree theft and attempted second-degree theft.

No kidnapping, but man faces sexual-assault charges

A 31-year-old 'Ewa Beach man who sheltered a 14-year-old runaway girl for the past six months was arrested yesterday for suspicion of nine counts of first-degree sexual assault and three counts of third-degree sexual assault.

The girl first told police that she was held against her will and sexually assaulted numerous times between March 12 and Sept. 11, but later acknowledged she consented to the sexual encounters and was not prevented from leaving.

Police dropped a potential kidnapping charge against the man but are pursuing the sex-assault case against him because the girl is a minor and he is more than five years older.

Double-bit axe used to threaten man

A 37-year-old Aina Haina man was arrested yesterday after he allegedly threatened a 27-year-old man with a double-bit axe.

Police said the younger man told them he was arguing with the older man who pressed the axe blade against his throat and threatened to kill him.

Police said the younger man ran from the area, called 911 and identified suspect when police arrived.

The older man was arrested for suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening.
