TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"House," 8 p.m., Fox. The best show on television opens its second season with a strong hour.

Dr. Gregory House usually ducks cases. Now, however, he's obsessed with saving a prisoner (played by LL Cool J) who will soon be executed. Meanwhile, Dr. Allison Cameron clings to hope as a young woman is dying of cancer. Both stories are beautifully written and acted.

"Bones" debut, 7 p.m., Fox. Temperance Brennan is a forensic anthropologist. She has great fighting skills, zero people skills. Seeley Booth is an FBI agent, a quiet guy who catches crooks. He refers to all scientists as "squints." They have nothing in common except they're good at their work and they're TV-pretty. She's played by Emily Deschanel; he's played by David Boreanaz of "Angel." Mostly, this is a tug of opposites. The result brings humor, intelligence and bursts of emotion.

OF NOTE

"The Biggest Loser," 7 p.m., NBC. The new season begins with 14 people desperate to lose weight. A family doctor can't give his patients good advice when his own weight has ballooned dangerously; a former wrestling champion gets winded when climbing stairs. Tonight, one trainer (Jillian Michaels) pushes the men, another (Bob Harper) pushes the women.

"Gilmore Girls," 7 p.m., WB. Last season's finale brought big surprises: Lorelai, the hesitant one, proposed to Luke. Rory, the smart one, stole a yacht, was arrested and dropped out of school. Tonight, we quickly get Luke's answer then find lots of detours and surprises. It's a great "Gilmore" filled with clever twists of dialogue.

"Rescue Me," 7 p.m., FX. The season finale catches the aftershocks from the death of Tommy and Janet's son. Tommy is thinking revenge; Janet is losing hope that their marriage will survive.

"World Music Awards," 8 p.m., ABC. Lots of stars perform, including Stevie Wonder, Mariah Carey, Carlos Santana, Bon Jovi and Destiny's Child.

"Supernatural" debut, 8 p.m., WB. Two brothers (Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki) face deep misery in this brand new show. Their mother was killed when they were little and their dad is on a perpetual search for evil. Now they're caught up in it.

"It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," 8 and 8:30 p.m., FX. This oddly likable show keeps finding fun in the darkest circumstances. Tonight, in the season finale, the guys' old gym teacher has been accused of molestation. Schemes follow.

"Tommy Lee Goes to College," 8:30 p.m., NBC. In the season finale, the rock drummer takes some tests, then throws a party.
