A 10-month-old girl was critically injured and four others seriously injured in a head-on collision near Waimea Bay last night.

The accident happened about 9:10 p.m. on Kamehameha Highway near the entrance to the beach park. Details were not available last night, but the accident apparently involved a minivan and a smaller vehicle.

One of the vehicles struck a railing, police said.

The girl was in a child safety seat in the smaller car and initially was not breathing, Emergency Medical Services said. Emergency personnel performed CPR on the girl and were able to revive her.

An EMS spokeswoman said the baby was in the front seat of the sedan, which had its front end demolished.

The girl was flown by an Army medevac helicopter to The Queen's Medical Center, where she was in critical condition. The driver of the smaller car, a woman in her 50s, also was taken by helicopter to Queen's in serious condition.

A 55-year-old man who was driving the van was taken by ambulance to Queen's, where he was in serious condition.

A 12-year-old boy and 20-year-old man who were passengers in the van were taken to Wahiawa General Hospital for treatment. They were in stable condition last night, EMS said.

Police closed Kamehameha Highway and turned back south-bound motorists in Pupukea, while vehicles heading toward Kahuku were also turned back.
