Rainbow volleyball drops to 9th in poll

The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team dropped three spots yesterday to No. 9 in the CSTV/AVCA Coaches Poll after losing twice to Washington last week.
The Rainbow Wahine (5-5) will open their Western Athletic Conference season with a home match against Boise State on Thursday.
Nebraska (9-0) remained at No. 1 with 58 first-place votes and 1,498 points. Washington (9-0) is No. 2 with the two remaining first-place votes and 1,435 points.

HAWAI'I-HILO SWEEPS AT GRAND CANYON
Taina Savage had 10 kills, nine aces and 11 digs as Hawai'i-Hilo beat Grand Canyon, 30-15, 30-22, 30-27, last night in Phoenix.
Rose Ramsey had 13 kills and Cori Sutter added 11 for the Vulcans, who improved to 8-4.
Grand Canyon (5-11) hit just .050 for the match.
UH JOB SEARCH
69 APPLY FOR ASSISTANT ATHLETIC DIRECTOR POST
The University of Hawai'i-Manoa has received 69 applications to replace Tom Sadler, who resigned last month as the No. 2 person in its athletic department.
An athletic department official said, "we will start to narrow down (the list of applicants) soon" and an advisory committee will assist in the process
The school declined to say how many of the applicants were from in state.
Sadler, who said he would take a position in private business in Arizona, had a salary of $110,000.
Meanwhile, UH has begun to interview candidates for its vacant head swimming coach position and will begin interviews for the women's tennis coach job Friday.
UH has been without a head swimming coach since July when the contract of Mike Anderson was not renewed after four seasons. The school did not give a reason for its decision to drop Anderson.
The contract of women's tennis coach Carolyn Katayama also was not renewed.

3 Hawai'i women fail to qualify in N.Y.
Three Hawai'i golfers failed to qualify for match play at the USGA Senior Women's Amateur at the Apawamis Club in Rye, N.Y.
Honolulu's Lily Yao and Bev Kim completed their second round of stroke-play qualifying yesterday because of darkness the previous day.
The top 64 qualified for match play.
Yao finished at 186 and Kim had a 178. The top qualifier was Carol Semple Thompson of Sewickley, Pa., who finished with a 151.
Rose Pagan of Kula, Maui, finished with a 169 on Sunday.
