WestJet Airlines Ltd, a Calgary-based low-cost airline, has announced it will have five-flights-a-week service between Honolulu, Maui and Vancouver beginning Dec. 9, the Canadian newspaper National Post reported today.

It will be competing with two other Canadian carriers on the routes, Air Canada and Harmony Airways. The announcement was made at an industry conference in Toronto yesterday by WestJet CEO Clive Beddoe, the Post reported.

WestJet has a 30 percent share of the Canadian market and recently received certification to fly twin engine Boeing 737 jets. Ticket sales for the Hawai'i routes are to begin immediately.

Including a dealer mark-up, pump prices next week are expected to be about $3.05 a gallon for regular.

Under Hawai'i's gasoline price cap law maximum wholesale prices are released every Wednesday and take effect each Monday.

Kona deep-sea fish farm prepares for first harvest of kampachi

A commercial deep-sea fish farm at the Big Island's Keahole Point tomorrow plans to mark its first harvests of its Kona kampachi.

It is believed to be the first time the fish, also known as amberjack, has been raised commercially.

Neil Sims, president of Kona Blue Water Farms LLC, said the company has started weekly harvests of 3,000 pounds of its trademarked product and plans to expand to as much as 8,000 pounds per week by the end of the year.

Sims said the farm-grown Kona product, unlike those caught in the wild, have been tested and found clean of any traces of mercury or contamination.
