Warriors shut down Idaho in WAC football opener

Associated Press

MOSCOW, Idaho — Hawai'i quarterback Colt Brennan completed 34 of 44 passes for 347 yards and three touchdowns, leading the Warriors to a 24-0 victory over Idaho in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both tonight.

Brennan completed at least four passes to four different receivers, and his first-half scoring throws to Ross Dickerson and Davone Bess covered 11 and 17 yards, respectively. He added a 7-yard touchdown pass to Bess in the fourth quarter.

Hawai'i (1-2) also performed well defensively, holding Idaho (0-4) to 153 total yards, 112 of which came through the air.

The Warriors took the opening drive and marched 68 yards in nine plays, capping the series with Brennan's scoring pass to Dickerson, though the point-after attempt failed. The Warriors went ahead 14-0 in the second quarter following Brennan's first touchdown pass to Bess and a 2-point conversion run by Tyler Graunke.

Hawai'i added a 44-yard field goal by Dan Kelly with just under 3 minutes to play in the third quarter, then scored again in the fourth when Brennan found Bess all alone in the back of the end zone. Bess finished with 10 catches for 106 yards, and Michael Washington added seven receptions for 46 yards.

Idaho quarterback Steven Wichman, who had thrown for 390 yards and three scores two weeks earlier against UNLV, completed just 8 of 25 passes and tossed an interception. The game was Idaho's first as a member of the WAC. The Vandals spent the previous four years in the Sun Belt Conference.
