Boy fishing on Big Isle vanishes

Advertiser Staff

Big Island firefighters searched yesterday for a 12-year-old boy who was reported missing Saturday night while fishing with his uncle and brother at Ka'awaloa near Kealakekua Bay in south Kona.

Alexander De Rego of Kamuela was last seen at about 8:30 p.m. The boy was carrying a dive light, which was found.

The search effort, which began Saturday night, included divers who went in the waters at 4 a.m. yesterday. Firefighters and the boy's family were involved in the land search, which covered Ka'awaloa Point and the shoreline two miles north of the Capt. Cook monument. Coast Guard aircraft assisted in the search.
