ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
A slice of advice on weight loss

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Hate to diet? Family Circle offered a few tips for cutting back with ease:

  • Eat an orange, skip the juice: While both are nutrient powerhouses, offering high doses of Vitamin C, potassium and folate, OJ has 110 calories per 8-ounce glass while an orange has only 60 calories and offers some bonus fill-you-up fiber.

  • Condiments on your sandwiches can make a world of difference: Mustard and salsa are great low-calorie, flavor-packed choices.

  • Adding small amounts of activity can bring significant changes over time. Simple steps like walking the dog for 15 minutes instead of letting him out in the backyard or pacing while talking on the phone are a good start.

    'FLIGHTPLAN' SOARS

"Flightplan," starring Jodie Foster as a mother whose daughter goes missing on a plane, earned $24.6 million in its first weekend out.

The macabre romance in "Tim Burton's Corpse Bride" took second place with $20.1 million, pushing last week's No. 1 film, "Just Like Heaven" to the third spot with $9.8 million.

The Fox Searchlight period skating film "Roll Bounce" bowed in fourth place with $8 million.

    FINAL WORD

"She could be white, black, Asian. It's very nondescript and that's the great thing about the show. It's about four women in a neighborhood. No matter what color, what race, what culture you are, you deal with the same problems in life."
