Wai'anae's Bartels wins OP Pro Classic

Wai'anae's Melanie Bartels won the women's division of the OP Pro Classic on Sunday at Newport Beach, Calif.

The final day of the week-long contest was completed in 5- to 6-foot waves. Bartels, 23, defeated three California surfers in the final heat.

The event was part of surfing's World Qualifying Series. Bartels received $2,000 and moved up to No. 8 on the 2005 WQS rankings.

Maui's Hank Gaskell placed fourth in the final of the men's division. California's Nathaniel Curran won the men's title.


GOLF

HILO MEN TIED FOR 9TH

The University of Hawai'i-Hilo men's golf team shot a second-round 302 yesterday and are tied for ninth at the Viking Invitational at the Bellingham Golf & Country Club in Washington.

Host Western Washington leads with a 568. The Vulcans are tied with St. Martin's at 591.

Hilo's top golfer is Kevin Shimomura, who is tied for 18th at 145.


VOLLEYBALL

UH WOMEN NO. 11

The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team dropped two spots to No. 11 in the CSTV/AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 Poll yesterday.

Hawai'i (7-6) last week swept visiting Boise State in the Western Athletic Conference opener, and split a pair of nonconference matches against visiting Loyola Marymount.

Nebraska (11-0) is No. 1 followed by Washington (10-0), and Stanford (13-1).
