POLICE BEAT
Rifle seized at local school

Advertiser Staff

A 15-year-old boy was arrested yesterday after he was found carrying a .22-caliber rifle at Farrington High School, police and school officials said.

Police said the boy was seen about 9:10 a.m. carrying what appeared to be a gun case around the grounds of the school.

They said school security officers confronted the boy and he admitted the case contained a firearm.

School security guards escorted the boy to the school office where a firearm was recovered.

Department of Education spokesman Greg Knudsen said the student brought the firearm on campus to try to sell it.

"Certainly guns are not allowed on campus so it's actually a very serious disciplinary matter," said Knudsen.

Under both state and federal rules, said Knudsen, students who bring a firearm onto campus are subject to mandatory expulsion for a year.

Police were called to the school and arrested the boy on suspicion of carrying a firearm in public.

Man returns for shopping cart, gets arrested

A 38-year-old man was arrested at Kahala Mall last night after he allegedly piled about $1,300 worth of goods, including several unopened cartons of cigarettes, into his "own" commandeered shopping cart and wheeled it out of the store without paying.

Store employees said the man came to their attention about 7:30 p.m. because the cigarettes spotted in his cart are normally kept in a secured display case to which he did not have access.

Workers confronted the man after he pushed the cart out the door and he ran away, police said.

The same man returned to the store about 10 p.m. asking for his shopping cart back. Store employees detained the man and called police, who arrested him on suspicion of second-degree theft.

Baby's injuries investigated

Police have opened an investigation involving injuries to a 3-month-old girl.

The girl's caretakers brought her to a Honolulu hospital about 12:05 a.m. Wednesday because she had a fever and was "acting fussy," police said.

A doctor examined the infant and diagnosed her with brain and retinal bleeding.

Police said the injuries were determined to be suspicious in nature and opened a first-degree assault case.

The baby's condition was not immediately available this morning.

Boy suspect in sexual assault

Police yesterday arrested a 14-year-old Honolulu boy as a suspect in a sexual assault case reported by his 5-year-old sister.

The girl told police that she was assaulted a number of times by her brother between July 9, 2004 and April 5 of this year.

The boy, who was subsequently removed from the home and who had been living elsewhere, was located yesterday and arrested on suspicion of first- and third-degree sexual assault.

He was later released without charges pending further investigation.

Man accused in taxi robbery

A 54-year-old man has been arrested as a suspect in the Sunday night robbery of a Honolulu taxi driver.

The driver told police he picked up a fare about 9:20 p.m. at a bar in downtown Honolulu.

He said the passenger became argumentative as he was driving him to his destination. The driver said that when he dropped the man off and asked for the fare, the man punched him and ran away.

The driver identified the suspect later and he was arrested yesterday on suspicion of second-degree robbery.
