No. 19 Fullerton beats UH in soccer, 3-0

Taking six times as many shots as Hawai'i, 19th-ranked Cal State Fullerton beat the Rainbow Wahine, 3-0, yesterday in a women's soccer match at Fullerton, Calif.
Lisa Kosena, Rebekah Patrick and Lauryn Welch scored for Fullerton (8-2), which launched 24 shots, including 13 on goal.
Natasha Kai (three) and Jessica Domingo (one) took the only shots for Hawai'i, which fell to 3-5-2.
The Rainbow Wahine play at San Diego State tomorrow.
TENNIS
BYUH OFF TO FAST START
Top-seeded Junyoung Kim of Brigham Young-Hawai'i won two matches yesterday to advance to the semifinals of the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association West Regionals at Pomona, Calif.
Kim defeated Kevin Sakata of Cal Poly Pomona, 6-0, 6-0, and Andy Muesse of Sonoma State, 6-3, 6-1. Also winning two matches and advancing was third-seeded Leon So'onalole of BYUH. Kim and So'onalole also advanced to the doubles semifinals with an 8-4 win over Sonoma State's John Murten and Kevin Buyse.
In the women's competition, BYUH's Julia Ustyuzhanina (top seed) and Tetyana Bula (second seed) each won their opening matches, then paired to rout Rona Miller and Elena Pak of Cal State-Los Angeles, 8-0.
MAGEE SECTION DIRECTOR
Leilani Magee has been appointed the new Director of Community Tennis for the Hawai'i Pacific Section of the U.S. Tennis Association. Magee replaces Madeleine Dreith, who took over the new position of Tennis Service Representative.
Magee will start Oct. 14.
Her tennis career began as a Peter Burwash International pro in Texas, the British West Indies, Hong Kong and on Lana'i. She was also Director of Schools for the Hawai'i Section in 1993 and a tennis pro at Punahou School in 1994. Most recently, Magee served as Director for Upcountry Tennis in Kula and helped coach local juniors.
As a player, she won singles and doubles championships in NAIA District 1 while playing for Puget Sound in 1990. Magee is a member of the U.S. Professional Tennis Association with a rating of Professional 1.
ECUADOR DROPS U.S.
Ecuador beat the U.S. team, with Aiea's Dennis Lajola, yesterday to reach the semifinals of Junior Davis Cup by BNP Paribas in Barcelona.

HAWAI'I WOMEN 25TH
Honolulu's Cyd Okino, the youngest player in the field at 11, shot a final-round 1-under-par 72 yesterday to lift Hawai'i into a tie for 25th at the USGA Women State Team Championship in Bluffton, S.C.
Okino (72—237), 17-year-old Erin Matsuoka (78—238) and 15-year-old Nicole Sakamoto (82—246) comprised the Hawai'i team that shot a 470 total in the 54-hole tournament.
Georgia won with 434.
In the men's competition, the Hawai'i team of Kellen-Floyd Asao (72—222), Chris Souza (83—235) and Shannon Tanoue (79—235) finished in a tie for 40th with a 452 total.
Texas won with 422.
SURFING
BRUCE IRONS MOVES ON
Kaua'i's Bruce Irons advanced to the fourth round of the Quiksilver Pro France yesterday in 4- to 6-foot waves at La Nord, Hossegor, France.
Irons had the best heat of the day, receiving a two-wave total of 18.26 in his third-round victory over Brazil's Raoni Monteiro.
Andy Irons, Bruce's older brother, advanced to the fourth round on Wednesday.
BASKETBALL
DUKE ON MAUI IN 2007
Duke, Illinois and Oklahoma State will be among the teams in the 2007 EA Sports Maui Invitational, the tournament announced.
Other teams are Arizona State, Louisiana State, Marquette, Princeton and host Chaminade.
Duke is 9-0 on Maui, having won won the invitational three times.
Marquette, Oklahoma State and Princeton will be making their debuts on Maui.
"This little Chaminade University event, which debuted in 1984, has grown to become college basketball's premier early-season tournament," said Dave Gavitt, the tournament chairman.
The field for this year's tournament — to be played Nov. 21 to 23 at Lahaina Civic — includes six former NCAA champions.
The field has Arizona, Arkansas, Connecticut, Gonzaga, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan State and host Chaminade.
The 2006 field will be DePaul, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Memphis, Oklahoma, Purdue, UCLA and Chaminade.

TAKATA GRABS BRONZE
Iolani graduate Taylor Takata won the bronze medal in the 66-kilogram (145 1/2-pound) division at the Rendez-Vous Canada tournament in Montreal this past weekend.
The Rendez-Vous is one of the top two tournaments in North America with the other being the U.S. Open this weekend in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
