1868: Mauna Loa erupts violently and causes local tsunamis that destroy shoreline villages in Ka'u. Many deaths are reported.

1900: Lili'uokalani, the deposed queen, has written a book for private circulation and applied for a copyright, The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports. She started on the book, "The Hawaiian Tradition of the Creation," while imprisoned.

1948: The first 'Aiea Heights fee-simple house lots are offered for sale.

1948: The system of employing inmates of O'ahu Prison on work lines outside the prison walls, including the maintenance of public grounds and buildings, is abolished.

1978: The passenger liner Mariposa sails out of Honolulu for the last time.

1995: Waipahu landmark Arakawas closes its doors for good. The family store was founded in 1909 by Zempan Arakawa.

2001: The USS Greeneville leaves drydock after $2 million in repairs. On Feb. 9 the Greeneville collided with a Japanese training ship off Diamond Head. Nine men and boys on the Japanese ship were killed.

2002: The crew of the Indonesian tanker Insiko 1907 are rescued by the cruise ship Norwegian Star and taken to Kona. They had spent 20 harrowing days adrift on their crippled vessel after a fire killed one sailor and badly burned another.

2005: Pope John Paul II, who had led the Catholic Church for 25 years, dies at the age of 84.
