Cigarette lighter started fire that killed 2-year-old boy

Advertiser Staff

A fire at a Wahiawa apartment building on Sunday that claimed the life of a 2-year-old boy was started by a child playing with a cigarette lighter, fire investigators have concluded.

"The boy who was killed is not the one who was playing with the lighter," said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Kenison Tejada.

Nathaniel Nunes, who turned 2 on March 30, could not be rescued in time from a fire on the second floor of an apartment building at 284 California Ave.

Two adults and three children escaped from the fire unharmed.

The boy's mother, Christina Nunes, said she attempted rescue the youngest of her three sons but the flames overwhelmed her efforts.
