On April 5, 1917, the Pacific Commercial Advertiser reported on site clearing for the new federal building. The U.S. Post Office, Custom House and Court House opened in April 1922.

1890: Maui Telephone Company inaugurates its central office and at 7:10 p.m. the first message "flashed over the wires. Mr. A.F. Hopke calling up central to tender congratulations on the success-ful opening of the line. ..."

1897: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports that Hilo Electric Light Co. has begun operating its ice plant and is turning out tons of ice daily.

1932: Clarence Darrow says he found questioning of the mixed-race jury pool for the Massie-Fortescue case one of the most puzzling experiences of his life.

1946: The territorial board of health orders Hilo quarantined, saying conditions there in the aftermath of the tsunami were dangerous to the health of the community.

1950: The U.S. snorkel-type submarine Pickerel arrives in Pearl Harbor after setting a record for underwater operations by traveling submerged from Hong Kong to Hawai'i. The submarine was submerged for 21 days.

1956: Foodland Supermarkets says it will appeal a court ruling that enjoined it from selling its goods below cost to attract customers.

1961: Honolulu Rapid Transit Co. cuts bus driver benefits, saying the union broke its word by letting a slowdown in bus service continue.

1968: Rioting over the assass-ination of Martin Luther King Jr. continues in 46 Mainland cities. At least 15 people die.

1974: All of Maui is blacked out by a 7:30 a.m. power failure. Some power is restored by 10 a.m.

1975: Former Gov. John Burns, who served three terms as governor and dominated Island politics for two decades, dies of cancer. He was 66.

2001: Hawaii's entire public education system is shut down by two strikes. The Hawai'i State Teachers Association and the University of Hawai'i Professional Assembly both went out on strike the same day, shutting all public schools and all UH campuses.

2002: Two Hawaiian Humane Society staffers set out on a mission to rescue a dog left on the crippled Indonesian tanker Insiko 1907. The crew had been rescued by the Norwegian Star on April 2 but the captain's 2-year-old dog was left on board.
