Iolani wins long-awaited opener

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

After a long wait that got unexpectedly longer, Iolani finally opened its Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls basketball season last night and took about eight seconds to get untracked.

Junior guard Kaz Masutani swished a 12-foot baseline jumper on the visiting Raiders' first possession, and they never looked back in cruising to a 63-34 victory over Sacred Hearts.

The Lancers fell to 1-1.

Iolani, which made it to the state quarterfinals last season without any seniors, was to have opened its ILH season last Friday but its game against Kamehameha was postponed because of heavy rain and flood conditions that afternoon.

While some O'ahu Interscholastic Association teams are six games into their regular season, the Raiders have had only two non-league games since the Punahou Wahine Spring Classic ended one month ago.

"We were disappointed (last Friday)," said Iolani senior center Megan Burton, who scored a game-high 14 points last night. "We were excited and we really wanted to play Kamehameha. But now I guess it's a positive, because we have more time to practice and get ready for them. That's why tonight's game was so important — we wanted to start strong and show that we mean business."

The Raiders certainly accomplished that, jumping to leads of 6-0, 11-2 and 20-4 in the first period behind a balanced attack that featured seven different players in the scoring column.

They rotated even more players into the lineup in the second period and took a 28-10 lead into halftime, then stretched it to 44-19 after three quarters.

"Obviously, they're the best team in the state," Sacred Hearts coach Alan Matsui said. "They jumped on us early, and we've got one starter out because of a torn (antrior cruciate ligament) and another due to academics, so we're still trying to find ourselves. But take nothing away from Iolani — they're a great team up and down the line and they have no weaknesses."

As if the Raiders weren't deep enough with 11 returnees, they added the 6-foot-2 Burton this season after she sat out last year because of ILH transfer rules. She played for Sacred Hearts as a freshman and sophomore.

"I was nervous; it did feel strange walking into this gym," Burton said. "I have a lot of loving friends here and they're still like family to me, like Samantha Saito — we were teammates since the seventh grade. I didn't transfer because I didn't like my teammates, and they know that.

"They greeted me as one of their own."

Matsui, who was Burton's position coach at Sacred Hearts, said her addition will only make Iolani stronger.

"She can do a lot in the post, especially in a halfcourt set, and she really improved her free-throw shooting," Matsui said. "She's a great kid."

Sophomore Jamie Smith added 13 points, three rebounds, a block and an assist for the Raiders, and senior Keilyn Fujioka contributed 10 points, three rebounds, three blocks and two assists. Both also play in the post.

In addition to not having seniors last season, Iolani had only one in 2004. So the Raiders have plenty of veterans who have been waiting a long time for this payoff year.

"After they came back from spring break, they were sluggish for a couple days because we haven't been playing games," Iolani coach Glenn Takara said. "Then they were so excited to play Kamehameha, and it got postponed. So today was good ... it was nice for them to get back into playing somebody else instead of each other."
