New coaches at Kamehameha, Kalani

Advertiser Staff

Two head coaching positions were filled today in the high school ranks.

At Kamehameha Schools, former junior varsity coach Guy Kaniho has been named new varsity boys volleyball coach, athletic director Erv Kau announced.

At Kalani High, Glenn Oshiro, a 21-year veteran of the Honolulu Police Department, has been the new varsity football coach, athletic director Gregory Van Cantfort said.

Oshiro replaces Greg Taguchi as the Falcons' head coach.

Oshiro, a 1979 graduate of Maryknoll and a former Pac-5 football player, has 23 years of coaching experience.

He served as Iolani's running back coach under Wendell Look and spent the last three years as Pac-Five's Intermediate and Mid Pacific Institute's Intermediate head coach and offensive coordinator.

Kaniho replaces his mentor Pono Ma'a, who resigned due to family and professional obligations.

Kaniho has led Kamehameha's junior varsity to Interscholastic League of Honolulu championships the past three seasons and a runner-up finish in 2002. He has also coached girls volleyball at Kaiser High School and boys volleyball at St. Louis.
