UH holds No. 21 Fresno State in baseball

Advertiser Staff

Steven Wright pitched seven strong innings and Darrell Fisherbaugh stranded the potential tying run on second base to end the game to help Hawai'i topple No. 21 Fresno State, 5-3, Friday night in Western Athletic Conference baseball at Beiden Field in Fresno, Calif.

The Rainbows improved to 25-9 overall and 3-3 in the WAC, while the Bulldogs dropped to 24-10 and 5-2.

Wright (5-2) allowed two runs, one earned, four hits and two walks with 10 strikeouts.

Matt Daly gave up a run in one-plus innings of relief. He gave up a single and an error by second baseman Joe Spiers put the potential tying run on first with no outs before Daly gave way to Fisherbaugh.

A fly out to center moved one runner to third and after a stolen base put the tying runner at second, Fisherbaugh struck out the next two batters to end the game and notch his seventh save.

Doug Fister (4-4) gave up five runs (four earned) in 6° innings for the Bulldogs.

Robbie Wilder was 3 for 3 with two steals, a hit batsman and walk and scored a run for UH.

The series resumes Saturday at 3:35 p.m., Hawai'i time.
